ITEM 1

– The old woman keeps wondering and even seems to be envious of the young girl’s success just after a very short time while she has been working there longer than her.
Analyze: the picture shows a false judgment: the older woman thinks that the older the better, it means who work longer must get promoted before people who start working after. This judgment is not based on ability that people have at all so it might be some kinds of prejudice on age.
ITEM 2
– In the piece of the newspaper, it is reported the fact that many people think about tycoon when the long leg girls come to their mind. They also seem to suspect many Misses by that way of thinking.
Analyze: a popular assumption: tycoons with misses. There is a conclusion being drawn in hurry. Not every beautiful girl with their long legs all date with or get married with wealthy man. They are just very many in minority.
ITEM 3
“Alice: You can find cuckoo clocks in Switzerland, Germany and Austria, with the cuckoo making a distinctive cry every hour.
Rob: But in Scotland, if you hear the cuckoo calling then you should run away from it as quickly as you can. And the number of times you hear the cuckoo is the number of years you’ve got left to live.
Alice: Oh dear. So surely you should walk away very slowly – then you’d hear more calls and live longer? It seems like a very odd superstition to me – it’s a real old wives’ tale. An old wives’ tale is what we call superstitions that are totally untrue and ridiculous sometimes. Now I would definitely say that that sounds like an old wives’ tale to me.”
– Rob says that in Scotland, when people hearing the cuckoo calls they should run away from it quickly and the number of times people hear the cuckoo is the number of years people have got left to live.
– Alice wonders if the more calls people hear, the longer they live?
Analyze: The short conversation shows a stereotype named superstition; it means the belief that particular events happen in a way that cannot be explained by science or reason. Obviously it is not true because there are no scientific results prove this theory.
Hi Thuong,
I have just had a look at your performance and I would like to leave some comments on your work:))
– Firstly, I believe we hold the same view that the first item is the prejudice yet i think it is the prejudice based on the work experience. In your entry, as you mentioned in the previous part, the old woman keeps wondering and even seems to be envious of the young girl’s success just after a very short time while she has been working there longer than her. It is the prejudice on the experience but not clearly on the age.
-Secondly, in the second item, I think it is the stereotype that people hold about the tycoons and misses. People generally think that misses always have a relationship and scandals with tycoons. It is fixed and mental beliefs and ideas.
-Finally, I think it is assumption – conclusion based on limited knowledge of the facts because particular events happen in a way that cannot be explained by science or reason. Obviously it is not true because there are no scientific results prove this theory.
Hoping this can help!!!!!!! :))
Your friend,
Yen
Hi Thuong,
After reading your entry, I want to share some of my opinions:
1st item: I agree that this is prejudice and like Yen’s opinion, I think it is the prejudice on the working experience. The old woman is jealous with the success of the young girl and argues that she has longer experience. However, her argument is not logical, because the promotion for staff depends on not only their long experience but also other important factors like their responsibility or ability.
2nd item: I share the same idea with you about the assumption here. It concludes that tycoons and misses have a close relationship, while in reality not all tycoons and misses have connection with each others. This is just based on some cases, not full knowledge of the facts.
3rd item: It is rather difficult for me to understand this item as well as your analysis. I know that it is superstition, but I have never heard about “stereotype named superstition”. What is stereotype here? Or can you show readers what is mental image of a group in this item? I think you should analyze more about this item as well as express your ideas more clearly.
Hoping that you will have a better entry 🙂 !
